Elevating Community Support Through Competitive Spirit
Decade-Long Tradition of Giving Back
For over a decade, the America East Conference has united its member institutions in a collective effort to combat food insecurity. The Food Frenzy competition has become an integral part of this mission, fostering camaraderie among student-athletes while addressing critical needs within their communities. UMass Lowell has consistently led this initiative, collecting over 60,000 items since 2018.The competition not only highlights the competitive spirit of student-athletes but also underscores their commitment to social responsibility. Each year, the drive garners support from various sectors of the university and surrounding areas, including students, faculty, and local residents. This collaborative effort ensures that thousands of individuals receive essential resources, thereby enhancing the quality of life for many.
Student-Athlete Dedication Drives Success
The success of the Food Frenzy is largely attributed to the unwavering dedication of UMass Lowell’s student-athletes. Jen Slanovec, a senior softball player, emphasized the importance of this initiative, noting how it fosters a sense of unity and purpose within the athletic department. “It’s incredible to witness the persistent effort and generosity of everyone involved,” she remarked. “Our internal competition among teams further fuels our determination to make a difference.”Slanovec’s team won the internal Food Frenzy challenge, showcasing the competitive edge that drives the broader initiative. The softball team’s achievement exemplifies how individual efforts can collectively contribute to significant outcomes. By channeling their competitive nature into charitable endeavors, the student-athletes create a ripple effect of positive change within the community.
Community Partnerships Strengthen Impact
The impact of the Food Frenzy extends beyond mere numbers; it strengthens partnerships with local organizations. This year’s collection benefited several key entities, including UML Strive, Catie’s Closet, and the Merrimack Valley Food Bank. These organizations rely on such contributions to provide essential services to those in need.Alison Quandt Westgate, Senior Associate Athletic Director for Student-Athlete Excellence, praised the collaborative efforts. “Our student-athletes, coaches, and staff are committed to giving back to the community that supports us so generously,” she said. “Through these partnerships, we ensure that the assistance reaches those who need it most.”The relationships forged through the Food Frenzy enhance the university’s role as a cornerstone of the community. By working closely with local partners, UMass Lowell demonstrates its dedication to creating sustainable solutions for food insecurity and other pressing issues.
Honoring a Legacy of Service
The Food Frenzy competition holds special significance as it honors the legacy of Toni Onikeku, a former UMass Lowell track & field athlete. Tragically, Onikeku lost his life in a drowning accident in 2018, but his vision for community service lives on through this initiative. Gary Gardner, Head Coach of the Women’s and Men’s Cross Country/Track & Field team, reflected on Onikeku’s impact. “Toni was a remarkable individual who always prioritized the well-being of others,” he said. “His legacy continues to inspire us to give back and make a difference in the lives of those around us.”Each year, the River Hawks carry forward Onikeku’s passion for community service, ensuring that his memory remains a driving force behind their efforts. This commitment reflects the enduring values of leadership, compassion, and service that define UMass Lowell’s athletic programs.
