ESPN is poised to broaden its live golf coverage by broadcasting the three PGA Tour FedExCup Playoff events throughout August. This move signifies a notable shift, as ESPN has not regularly featured live PGA Tour events on its linear channels since 2006, when the Golf Channel took over primary live telecasts.
According to reports, the live coverage will commence with the FedEx St. Jude Championship, airing from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. ET on Thursday and Friday for the initial two rounds. The following week, the BMW Championship will be broadcast from 10 a.m. to noon ET. Concluding the playoff series, the Tour Championship, which marks the PGA Tour’s season finale, will be covered from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. ET.
This increased commitment to golf follows ESPN's recent foray into live PGA Tour content earlier in the season. The network had previously simulcast PGA Tour Live coverage, notably during Brooks Koepka's return at the Farmers Insurance Open. PGA Tour Live, which produces the primary feed for golf events during non-linear television hours, has been a staple on ESPN+ for several years, providing extensive streaming access to fans.
Norb Gambuzza, a PGA Tour media executive, emphasized the positive impact of ESPN's renewed involvement, stating that it is beneficial for the core of PGA Tour golf. This strategic decision is reportedly influenced by PGA Tour CEO Brian Rolapp, a former NFL media executive known for his strong connections within major media corporations. His expertise has likely facilitated the re-establishment of this significant broadcast partnership.
The upcoming ESPN broadcasts will be simulcasts of the existing PGA Tour Live productions. However, these broadcasts will be considerably enhanced with advanced technology, including additional camera angles, drone footage, and sophisticated 3D course and hole modeling. While ESPN's linear channels provide this enhanced simulcast, PGA Tour Live will continue to offer comprehensive coverage for each event on ESPN+. Furthermore, there is potential for ESPN talent to contribute to these broadcasts from the PGA Tour Live studios located in Ponte Vedra Beach, Florida, adding an extra layer of expert commentary and analysis.
In anticipation of the events, the PGA Tour has announced that ESPN’s prominent daytime studio programs, including Get Up, The Pat McAfee Show, and SportsCenter, will dedicate segments to support and promote the extensive coverage.
